• Displaying "Ads" or random ANSI after login

From CloudDancer@21:3/226 to All on Mon Jan 26 18:26:31 2026
It's me, your regular echo spammer today ...

What is the best way to display random (or maybe even in sequence) ANSI screens to users post login? <-- two questions in one, both interest me

Is there a plugin or a convention on file naming in /text/ that auto shows up?

I would love to show a new ANSI for the networks we are part of (fsxNet, Fido, Agoranet, etc.) ... And maybe some ads to other BBS's (Pharcyde, etc.).

    Thanks in advance!

I'm not a guru on this by any means - I'm in the same boat as you as to relearning things and putting them into pratice for Mystic (I'm from the days of the Amiga! - which I'm actually looking at bringing my old BBS back online, albeit from scratch :/)

Anyhoo, how to display screens after they log in - I'd suspect prelogin is your friend (under menu editor). Insert before the (GO) action and make the new action a (GD) Display a file action. There are options you put into the Data field for the name, etc: https://wiki.mysticbbs.com/doku.php?id=menu_commands

Hope this helps - or is right!

my prelogin menu has directly after the ".. has logged into node .." line:

    (GD) Display a file random

and in your \mystic\themes\xx\text folder if you create the files

    random.0.ans
    random.1.ans
    random.2.ans

    etc

it should pick one out from those randomly on it's own

note that i dump non-ansi users so it never happens, but should you also want to include people who don't have ansi support you would also need at least a random.asc file to fill in for that case.

Tnx... I think someone answered right after you on how to do random stuff, as there is built-in capability, but I appreciate your help as well :)
