Some YouTube video I watched seemed to think that PC Gaming is increasing and console gaming is going down, but... that's about as far from actual data as one can get.

From what I can tell, people are still into buying/building gaming PCs...
or, at least, there are still companies out there trying to sell them on
    doing so.

I don't think there's nearly as much shareware these days as there used to
be, but there are still a lot of inexpensive games for PC. And there are
    even some free open-source games.

You don't even need the cheap games. The Epic games store licenses a game every week for free (at minimum).

I was just saying the cheap games are there if you want to play those..

Yeah, I still like building my own desktop PC, and I plan to keep doing so as long as it's feasible. I like PC gaming too, but that's not the only reason I like having a desktop PC. I use mine for a lot of things, and I like the freedom of being able to choose all the parts that go into my PC.

With the present RAM crisis, I think this generation will see a bit more predominance of consoles and console-like appliances over traditional
PCs. I also think it will be a bit of a lackluster generation. Nintendo started very strong with the Switch 2 but has started losing steam very quickly.

Yeah, I'm expecting that, with the present RAM crisis, there will be a bit more of a push to have games that _don't_ push the envelope, because the market will wind up too small.

As for the Switch 2... I've occasionally been tempted, but whatever level of temptation I had was squashed with Nintendo's terms of service, or their various icky stances on ownership or whatever it was that people were complaining about.

Having to spend $80 for Mario Kart was more of a problem on top of everything else, because then it's into, "expensive hobby" territory, and I have lots of options for that.

And with gaming, I can probably just continue playing Age of Empires 2.

That's gonna be tougher going further. With the increase of AI production and the closure of Crucial, prices and availability of chips are will be going in opposite directions and not in a good way.
