I tried this and figured that the "freezing" problem is, that when using Wine you can hide the (still open) font dialog by clicking elsewhere, so the application window is over the dialog. Since the dialog is modal however, it has to be closed for the application to respond to anything else. This can still be done using the ESC key :)
