Much later, I watched the latest two episodes of American Dad.
The first was the 400th episode, "400?!" Stan is apparently
killed in action, then is cloned a bunch of times.
That sounds familiar, but I stopped watching American Dad so long ago I
don't think I would have seen it.
It wasn't
great. The second was "Tales fron the Outer Frontier," a showcase
of three grim SF stories, and it was really nice. I was going to
say that I especially liked a particular one, but really all
three were interesting and watchable.
I've mentioned before that IMO late-run American Dad is at its
best when it ignores its own premise and does unrelated stories.
A recent episode called "The Treasure of Old Chinatown" is
another example, and "Gold Top Nuts" is one of my favorite 22-
minute TV chunks of all time. At this point, the regular episodes
feel kind of like filler.
This is a two day catch-up. Over the last couple of days I've been
watching movies based on TV shows.
Dragnet (blu-ray) 1987 comedy written by and starring Dan Aykroud as an
L.A. detective named "Friday" who is the nephew of the character from
the original TV series. He partners with Tom Hanks to take down some
devil worshiping(?) criminals. I'm not sure if I've ever seen an
episode of the original TV series, but the movie is OK, I guess. It was mostly background noise with a commentary.
Coneheads (4K disc) 1993 comedy based on the SNL sketch starring Dan
Arykroyd and Jane Curtin as pointed headed aliens who get stranded on
Earth following a failed invasion attempt. The SNL sketch was before my
time so much like "Dragnet" there's not much of a nostalgia factor. But
as turn your brain off and just go with background noise goes, it passes
the time. I also noticed the movie is loaded wall to wall with SNL cast members making cameos.
The Brady Bunch (blu-ray) 1995 comedy starring Gary Cole and Shelly Long
as the blended family parents trying to raise 6 kids in the modern age
while hopelessly trapped in the 70s. I really like this movie, but I
don't think I've watched it since the 90s. It held up great and was
often laugh out loud funny. Michael McKean turns up in both "Coneheads"
and this movie as the antagonist fighting against the people who are out
of step with modern society. I especially liked it when the family
would randomly burst out into song for no reason. "Put on your Sunday's
best kids. We're going to Sears."

A Very Brady Sequel (blu-ray ) 1996 sequel which finds the Brady family
still hopelessly trapped in the 70s while obliviously living in 90s
America. Tim Matherson costars as a conman pretending to be Carol
Brady's long-lost husband so he can steal a valuable antique the Brady's
have in their house. I really liked this one as well. I can't figure
out as much as I like the two Brady movies, why haven't I watched them
in decades. They would pair great with the Addams family movies.
