I think AI has the potential to be the salvation of some of the very
tired franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars, which have shown
themselves to alienate ever more fans from the franchise because each
succeeding edition has less in common with what drew people to the
franchise originally.
Imagine seeing the original Star Trek episodes done with top-quality AI
but with all the flaws buffed out.
I wouldn't want to see the original episodes redone. Well, maybe the one with
the planet devourer. That might be cool. But mostly I'd want to see *new*
stories using the original characters as they were at the time.
Absolutely, that would be great. But I'd like to see at least one of the original episodes with the rough edges polished, just to see how I like
it. Maybe it would feel "wrong" and I wouldn't want any more of the
polished remakes but I'd at least like to see it tried.
By flaws, I mean everything from all
those inconsistencies that annoy fans like which deck Kirk's cabin is on >>> up to the bad writing in really horrible episodes like Spock's Brain.
Then revise and produce all the original scripts that didn't get made
for one reason or another, especially budget, so that there are entirely >>> new episodes. Then go through the aftermarket books and grab the really
worthwhile stories for even MORE episodes.
The book that explains the planet devourer was created as a weapon against the
Borg and leads to the discovery of an even more powerful version than the
prototype, just as the Borg are coming for the Federation... that would be a >> cool one to do.
I'd love to see that.
The original episode is my all-time favourite episode for sheer edge-of-the-seat excitement alone. I thought William Windom was great in
it too, probably the single best guest star performance in the series.
Windom hated that episode and trek in general. Many years ago he was here
on stage and when the local fish wrap asked him about Star Trek. He went on
a rant about what a piece of crap it was and how the entire show was just a joke.
Years later, he found out there was money to be made selling photos and
signing autographs and making personal appearances and he changed his tune big-time. He even appeared in his old age in fan films.
(It was Jimmy Doohan's favourite episode too, or so he said anyway.)
That surprises me. While it?s a fan favorite, Scotty really doesn?t have
much to do in it. You would think Doohan would have liked one of the ones
where Scotty fell in love or something better.
Write entirely new episodes
that are CONSISTENT with the revised, fully-consistent canon. Something
like that could conceivably run for decades without ever having to worry >>> about aging actors or outrageous salary demands.
But the revised Canon wasn?t true at the time they were making the show.
It?s full of mistakes made in TNG and then applied retroactively to real
trek.
I'm sure the various guilds will throw a fit until the government passes laws
guaranteeing actors have veto power over the use of their images so they can >> still make outrageous salary demands.
Didn't the issue of AI recreations of actors get settled during the last
set of strikes? I was sure that it was one of the key issues....
