I've paid nearly no attention to the Karmelo Anthony trial, but he has
been found guilty.
At a high school track meet on April 2, 2025, Anthony stabbed an athlete
at a rival school, Austin Metcalf, to death. Despite the attack being unprovoked and excellent eyewitness evidence that Anthony came into the
tent he wasn't allowed to be in and refused to leave, and then provoked
the attack, he put on an affirmative defense of self defense at trial.
The jury didn't buy it.
I've now seen videos from lawyers familiar with Texas law explaining
when defense is allowed and when self defense may use deadly force, and
what the defense in the case would have to show to meet the criteria.
It sounded like an experienced prosecutor was able to put together a
solid case and had eye witnesses and was well prepared against what the defense might argue.
What I had no idea about was how Anthony's parents turned it into a
cause celeb and raised a substantial amount of money in various on line appeals to pay for his defense, then at one point, Karmelo was told to
file as an indigent to obtain a public defender. Donors began demanding
money back.
What a circus. Hey Ian, when will there be a Lifetime movie?

Yes, the parents bought a mansion and cars with the money donated for his >defense. They're absolute scumbags and it's not hard to see where the kid got >his morals from.

The defense lawyer put on such a poor performance, I half suspect he was >purposely tanking the case so there would be an "ineffective assistance of >counsel" issue for appeal, which would result in a new trial if they win on >that issue. Actually, there was one, but he was kicked off after saying he couldn't
be objective. And in case you didn;t know, it wasn't an all-white jury.

I was thinking if Karmelo was an adorable cancer kid who needed very expensive medical treatment, instead of a thug, his parents would have
raised the money and let him die anyway.
Why cannot the US attorney prosecute? It's got to be wire fraud.
