What did you watch?
In the morning, I watched The Horror of Fang Rock for the RADW rewatch
party.
I recognize the name, but have no memory of the plot. Wait, was this
the one with stonehenge and the moving rocks? Even if it is, I still
don't remember what happened. LOL
I then started watching two movies, Poolman and Hell of a Summer, but I turned both off. I ended up watching more Only Murders in the Building.
It's veering a little too much into Mabel's story, I think. She's got a mysterious backstory and all, but I want to see the core trio doing
their thing before I start seeing the side stuff so much. It's still a
good show, though. Charles and Oliver are both well-worn tropes, but
Martin and Short have their usual talent and chemistry. Gomez plays
pretty well with them, too.
What did everyone else watch?
On Friday I began a Tim Burtonathon by watching
Frankenweenie (blu-ray) 2012 stop-motion animated movie written and
directed by Tim Burton, and a remake of a 1984 short film by Burton.
The plot involves a young boy who reanimates his dead dog in a short of
parody of Frankenstein. I think this was only the second time I ever
watched this. It was boring and mostly background noise. The original
short film is also on the disc. I had planned to watch that first but
after about 10 seconds I quickly turned it off.
Corpse Bride (4K disc) 2005 stop-motion animated film co-directed by Tim Burton. I distinctly remember going to see this in the theater when it
first came out and falling asleep about 15 minutes into the movie then
waking up for credits. So, this was my first time actually watching the
movie all the way from beginning to end while also being awake. Turns
out, it was pretty good. Johnny Depp stars as a young man who is being
forced into a marriage with Emily Watson, but after running away on the
day of his wedding he accidentally awakens a corpse (Helena Bonham
Carter) when he says his marriage vows out loud. And now that they are legally (more or less) married, Carter's character plans to keep it that
way one way or another.
On Saturday I watched:
Edward Scissorhands (4K disc) 1990 movie written and directed by Tim
Burton. Johnny Depp stars as a young man who was built by an inventor (Vincent Price) who has giant scissors instead of hands. He is brought
home by an Avon lady played by Dianne Wiest where he falls in love with
her daughter Winona Ryder, and becomes the talk of the neighborhood,
until the neighborhood turns against him. This was mostly background
noise with a Tim Burton text commentary.
Sleepy Hollow (4K disc) 1999 movie directed by Tim Burton. Johnny Depp
stars as a late 18th century New York cop who is sent to Sleepy Hollow
to investigate a series of beheadings. Christina Ricci costars as
Winona Ryder, I mean the Johnny Depp character love interest. This
holds up very well. I love the scene when after Depp's character meets
the headless horseman he goes into a panic attack telling everyone the horseman had no head, when of course everyone already knew that and had
trying to him that, but he didn't believe it.
Beetlejuice (4K disc) 1988 movie directed by Tim Burton and starring
Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as a newly deceased couple who have to hire
a ghost (Michael Keaton) to get rid of a living family that has moved
into their house. Wynona Ryder also stars as a teenage girl who can see
the dead.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (4K disc) 2024 sequel directed by Tim Burton.
Michal Keaton returns to cause more trouble for Winona Ryder and her
teenage daughter (Jenna Ortega). Monica Bellucci also costars as Beetlejuice's ex-wife who is hunting him. And that's how I learned
Burton had broken up with Helena Bonham Carter and was with Monica
Bellucci. LOL. I watched this with a really boring Tim Burton
commentary. And to add insult to injury there are long obvious gaps
whenever Jeffrey Jones' character (yes that Jeffrey Jones from the first movie, if you know, you know) is on screen, but Burton oddly enough has nothing to say about it. I was very annoyed that the first movie didn't
have a commentary. But after this commentary, maybe that was for the
best. That being said, the overall movie was pretty good. Not great,
but watchable. All the stuff that didn't work for the movie was pretty obvious. Unfortunately, it didn't seem like Burton had anyone around to
tell him no or not every idea that popped into his worked.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (4K disc) 2016 movie
directed by Tim Burton. Asa Butterfield stars as a teenager whose
grandfather (Terence Stamp) is murdered after warning about monsters.
No one believes the warnings, but Asa's therapist (Allison Janney)
convinces the family to take Asa to visit his grandfather's past in
England. Once in England Asa stumbles upon a magic portal to 1943 where
he discovers his grandfather was telling the truth about monsters. Asa
meets a character played by Eva Green, who uses magic to hide from the monsters by keeping herself and a group of magical children in a
repeating time loop where they never grow old as the world passes around
them. But they are being actively hunted by monsters led by Sam
Jackson. I didn't do a good job of summarizing this. The movie is
actually a lot better than my summary.
