    After my workout, I watched:

BETELGEUSE'S IMMINENT SUPERNOVA EXPLOSION JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT DRAMATIC: Betelgeuse, the bright red shoulder of Orion, has fascinated astronomers
since Hermann Carl Vogel classified it as variable in 1850. Its erratic brightness, the Great Dimming of 2019, and subsequent identification of
a dust cloud in 2023 all hinted that something more complex was unfolding inside the star's vast, turbulent atmosphere. The idea that Betelgeuse
might hide a smaller companion has circulated since Walter Baade raised
the possibility in the 1920s, but the glare of a supergiant 700 times the Sun's diameter made direct confirmation nearly impossible.

In July 2025 a team led by NASA's Steve Howell used the 'Alopeke speckle imager on the 8.1 m Gemini North telescope to resolve that long-suspected companion. Speckle imaging freezes atmospheric turbulence with millisecond exposures, combining thousands of frames into a diffraction-limited picture. The newly resolved point of light is roughly six magnitudes fainter than Betelgeuse at optical wavelengths, sits about four astronomical units from
the primary star, and is estimated at 1.5 solar masses. Spectral clues
place it in a pre-main-sequence stage, meaning the Betelgeuse system now contains two objects at opposite ends of stellar evolution. The discovery
team has proposed the Arabic name "Siwarha," meaning "her bracelet," to
mirror Betelgeuse's traditional "Hand of the Giantess."

Because Betelgeuse is nearing the end of its life, Siwarha's future looks precarious. The supergiant
may engulf its neighbor through tidal drag within the next ten thousand years, or it might explode
first as a core-collapse supernova, violently altering or ejecting the companion. Astronomers expect
their best follow-up view in November 2027, when orbital motion places Siwarha at maximum apparent
separation. Continued high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy will refine its mass, age, and orbit,
offering a unique window on both massive-star death throes and the early life of its much younger
    partner.

Male cheerleaders don't sound that bad. There have always been a few.

This isn't the same. These dudes don't want to cheer, they want to be
female cheerleaders. Those guys in the clip are doing the prance-swish
thing, like every cliched gay guy in 90s sitcoms. They're not cheering; they're posing.

    What did you watch?

I caught some more Star Trek: Lower Decks

S3.E9 ? Trusted Sources: A reporter joins the Cerritos, and Captain
Freeman wants the ship to look better than it is. It's essentially the
first of a two-parter, since it ties into the next one.

S3.E10 ? The Stars at Night: Automated ships may replace the Cali-class
ships. The captain challenges one to a contest.

This episode is just excellent. It's hilarious, it has a good adventure
with a chest-swelling conclusion, it progresses everybody's character
arcs, and it even introduces some new stuff. I love this show, and I especially love that they were still trying after three years.

S4.E1 ? Twovix: Voyager gets the Lower Decks treatment.

It appears I missed a crossover between Lower Decks and Strange New
Worlds. Both shows appear to be set in the Land of Limited Continuity,
so sure, why not. Maybe catching up on Strange New Worlds will stretch
out Lower Decks. I didn't like SNW that much, but it was okay, and it's something to watch.

I also watched some ST:TAS and Married... With Children reruns.

    What did everyone else watch?

    Hey, thanks for asking!

    JURASSIC PARK WORLD AFTERBIRTH

In 1997, hack David Koepp “wrote” the worst Jurassic movie ever made. 28 years later, Steven Spielberg asked him if he could write one even worse.
He tried his best and aided and abetted by one of the worst directors in
the business, certainly scored a solid tie for bottom place.

Somehow, in just a couple years since the last movie, the atmosphere of the entire planet has changed, and now dinosaurs can only live in a narrow
strip along the equator. Luckily, this completely different atmosphere doesn’t affect humans at all, in or out of the dino zone. Of course no
humans are allowed in the dino zone because… Well, they don’t actually say. Why would it matter if dinosaurs can’t leave the zone?

A family, and yes, it’s pretty much the family from land of the lost right down to the obnoxious little girl who will befriend a dinosaur that looks
just like a midget in a Halloween costume, is sailing through the forbidden zone because… I never did figure out why. They immediately hit a “dinosaur” and capsize their sail boat, which remains upside down like the USS Poseidon. A boat with the rest of the main cast breaks away from their secret mission to rescue them saying that otherwise they’ll freeze to death in the icy waters of the equator, which would be 80 now and much hotter in
a couple years. They do this, even though there are plenty of boats in the area. What the hell happened to the forbidden zone anyway?

The second boat is on a mission to collect blood samples from the three
largest dinosaurs because with that you can cure all heart disease in
humans and give everybody an extra 20 years of life. We’ve had the
discussion about why the hell you have to get a blood sample from a living specimen before. They actually explain it here. Blood, every single drop of
it, every single drop of the hundred million gallons in the biggest
dinosaur that ever lived, instantly goes rancid when the creature dies.
Why can’t you just blow a hole in its tail and collect the blood there? It’s not dead. Oh, yeah, David Koepp is an idiot. So together they get the blood from the ocean dinosaur which then attacks them, forcing them to seek refuge on a nearby island that it turns out was their destination all
along. Because that’s where the giant flying dinosaur lives. Note that swimming creatures and flying creatures are not dinosaurs by definition.
Also, the biggest pterosaur isn’t going to have this gigantic heart they’re talking about because their bodies are like the size of a turkey. But then David Koepp is an idiot. They explain that this island is where they sent
all the mutant dinosaurs that didn’t work out right for accounting reasons.
Later, they find the secret laboratory where they actually made all those mutant dinosaurs, which is a completely different explanation for
everything than we have seen and were told because David Koepp is an idiot. Also, apparently the secret base has been sitting vacant for 17 years, but still automatically lights up all night when the generator kicks in. Must
be a big gas tank. All the vehicles and everything run too.

The rest of it is just dinosaurs eating people and you’re rooting for the dinosaurs at every turn. At one point, the sailboat people fall off a cliff
and the rest of the expedition just forgets about them and it breaks into
two movies. Nobody slaps the little girl for dragging a baby dinosaur along with them and throwing it food and leaving a trail of food for the
carnivorous creatures on this island to follow them.

And they apparently have a tyrannosaurus with six legs, but no lake bell
    just to scratch the surface.

Pretty much everything else is copy pasted from the earlier movies. And
this entire island is honeycombed with secret passages and ancient and
    modern tunnels because why not.

The movie has two happy endings. One is they decide to give the blood
samples (one of which is an egg white sample) to the world in general
because then everyone will magically stop having heart disease. I have no
idea how that would work. Why not give it to InGen and take the money and
then release the secrets to the world somehow as well? The other happy
ending is the obnoxious little girl takes her obnoxious dinosaur back to civilization even though dinosaurs can’t live more than a couple of miles from the equator. But apparently they forgot that. Because David Koepp an idiot.

Lately, in my YouTube feed, I've been getting short videos from college cheerleading practice sessions in which the base, either one or two men,
will throw the flyer, typically a tiny woman, into the air. She does a
flip or a turn. Sometimes he catches her on one hand, balanced on one or
    both feet.

These are large men but when the routine is executed properly, they are amazingly gentle when catching her so she doesn't get bruised. Because
    she's a cheerleader and not a gymnast, she's wearing a huge smile.

These guys don't prance nor pose, and look like smaller versions of
football linebackers. I doubt the women would trust them if they didn't
look strong enough to catch them and had any other primary interest in performing the routine as safely as possible.

I binged through the entire second season of GANGS OF LONDON on the Netflix. Binging isn't generally my preferred viewing style but Netflix started
throwing up a warning tag on the show saying it will be disappearing from the platform on August 18. This is the third time now that I've had to interrupt
my normal viewing schedule to concentrate on binging a Netflix show to get through it before it disappears.

They're also older, too old for Ian. These aren't college girls but the long-time cheerleaders are women in their late 20s and early thirties.

I mean, if you want to show that you support women's right to work
without harassment, which was a liberal value in the '70s that
Republicans held before Democrats did, you make sure they cannot get
harassed by male employees -- the football players must not date nor
