So, I read this based on your recommendation, and I enjoyed it. It is good, classic-style military SF with believable characters and reasonable writing. The author clearly knows the aviation world very well, and unfortunately that becomes a problem since it's taking place in a future world on another
planet where everyone follows 2020-vintage FAA procedures down to using
the same VHF aviation frequency band. It's a wonder we still use voice procedures for clearance at all still, so I can't believe in the 22nd
century that will be going on. Apparently in the future there are still
prop planes at the FBO. And people are doing VOR approaches.... something
that is already on the way out today in 2026.
Anyway, reasonably well written, gripping if predictable plot, a bit
oddly laid-out (just ditch the contents page please) but an enjoyable afternoon's read.
If you liked this, you might like High Citadel by Desmond Bagley which
takes place in the past instead of the future but has a lot of common attributes and is a great read too.
