hi Denizens of SF.written,
On May 19th I had a crash. It took me about 2 weeks to fix things and i did some reading.
"In High Places" by Harry Turtledove is a Crosstime Traffic story.
A young woman in a timeline retarded by an extreme
episode of the Black Death. She has been working with her
parents, posing as Muslims and leave for the city where they
will return to their own timeline which is advanced over
this one which we are living in. They travel with a caravan
and a guard set to spy on them to see if they are legitimate
persons. The caravan is attacked by a superior force.
She and the guard are captured together and they
are taken to a city and sold as slaves then then the plot
begins. A "transposition chamber" is used to transport them
to a location where they begin their work as slaves. It is
not the worst of slavery as they are well fed and the work
is not terribly onerous.
Any more and it would be spoiled beyond your
interest. It is a bit slow in parts but worth the read.
Picked this up from the SFPL in a paperback
that originally sold for $6.95. Glad I did not buy it
but it has advertising notes about another interesting
story which I do not believe I have read...
