    In that story, I think it was a mechanical donkey: i.e. a "robass".

    One of Westlake's Dortmunder novels (/Don't Ask/) involves attempts
    (this is Dortmunder, after all) to steal the Femur of St. Ferghana, a
    Holy Relic.
