The Coming Golden Age of Used Books
Just as the Great Fire of Rome was a boon for the building trade, so

1) Re: not using YouTube to look for new music
I have had some success (just some, mind you) in opening/using an
"Incognito" window in Chrome[1] to do all of my YouTube listening. The "tailored" recommendations come only from what you listen to during that session, which is good (less slop, more relevant recommendations) and
bad (every session starts from scratch).
2) Re: Footnote 4
Since the interWebz are currently claiming that the first word
processing software for personal computers was "Electric Pencil" in
1976, I have to agree with your rather surprising point - is it really
the case that nothing helpful has come along since then?

[1] There are other ways to do the same in other browsers. For example,
I believe Firefox would call their a "Private" window.
