• YASID Poul Anderson 'Friends'

From WolfFan@3:633/10 to All on Mon Sep 8 21:04:30 2025
    From: akwolffan@zoho.com

Probable Poul Anderson story. Starts with aquote from an English king about
how awful St Paul’s Cathedral was. Proceeds to colony world, no longer has interstellar capability. Gets visited (repeatedly) by someone who still has interstellar capability, who just wants to be friends and do business.

    A Tragedy of Errors:

"Once in ancient days, the then King of England told Sir Christopher
Wren, whose name is yet remembered, that the new Cathedral of St.
Paul which he had designed was 'awful, pompous and artificial'.
Kings have seldom been noted for perspicacity."

The joke being, which Poul knew very well, that when Charles II said it,
    it was a compliment.
