Right after you can provide numbers for how much they "saved" from

Sigh. Your mantra of taxing the rich grows tiring.

Many people of gone through the numbers, taking every penny of the rich
will not be even close to fixing the USA debt.

The only way to fix the debt problem through taxes is to tax the middle
class to death. And the uniparty is rightfully scared to do so.

So, the only way to fix the debt is to reduce the USA government back to
its stated rules of the USA Constitution. But the uniparty does not
want to do that either as they have made promises that the USA
    pocketbook cannot meet.

So, the financial apocalypse of the USA approaches as that is the
    default option.

Let me guess: after a Depression, war breaks out in Europe and East
Asia, and the US digs itself out of the hole by joining in to help the

OK, that doesn't match the Amazon description. The only problem with accepting the description is that yesterday I rented a movie
    /PSYCHO-PASS: Providence (Original Japanese Version)/ <https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DWZFH1YT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_d_asin_title_318_o02?ie=UTF8&psc=1>

describes what I saw. So Amazon descriptions are now ... questionable.

But if it's well-written, it may still be worth looking at.

My review is the top review on Amazon of the book. It is one of my
better reviews even if do say so myself. Here is a direct pointer.

Of course, the book and my review assume that the paranoid man in Moscow

In 1993 the Canadian federal government debt was 12.2 percent of GDP.
The net government debt was far worse, as our provinces were far deeper
in debt than your states are allowed to be.

The currency was so weak we began to call it the "Zloty".

The Liberal government eliminated the debt in five years, and we had
surpluses up to the Wall Street crimes of 2009.

This was done with some tax hikes, some spending cuts, many spending
freezes, and a growing economy. There were protests, of course, there
was anger. But it happened and the Liberals remained in power for
    twelve years.

Currently the US federal deficit is about 15% of GDP, but your states
are in much better shape than our provinces were. And while we couldn't squeeze much out of defense cuts you can cut tens of billions and it
    will just be a pinprick.

You can beat this without an apocalypse, without firing the people in
charge of your nuclear weapons, without cutting off HIV meds to hundreds
of thousands of poor people, without even taxing the rich a whole lot more.

You need time, a growing economy, some fiscal restraint, some tax
    increases. And patience.

If you do this, you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.

Though certain writers will need to find a different theme.

But neither major Party is interested. That sort of thing just isn't
    sexy enough.

I didn't say you would, only that you can.

But an absolute prerequisite for it to happen is that people realize
that it can happen. Rather than spending 100% of their time decrying the policies of the current parties, commentators should dial that back to
95%, and spend five percent talking about rational actions. Even if
these are only theoretical. Who knows, five percent of the population
    might agree.

Let us never forget the career of E. Scrydgemour, who ran as the
temperance party candidate against Winston Churchill, and lost six times
in succession. But on the seventh, he won. That which is declared
    impossible in politics can happen.

Deficit? "The amount by which expenditures
or liabilities exceed income or assets."
In government, deficit means borrowing money,
i.e. increasing your debt. If you have a lot
of debt, then borrowing more money is hard
    to justify.

A government can just print more money, yes.
But it seems to be generally believed that that
    doesn't work.

Amusing. I managed to err in my error correction. Wonder if I'll do it again.

Yes. I was comparing the annual shortfall of revenue vs income for
Canada in it early 1990s crisis and the US in its current state.

Of course, the debt both countries were carrying is a different matter.
Canada benefited from a drop in interest rates, and hence a drop in
payments needed to maintain the debt, in the 1990s. Though the US was benefiting from a similar trend in recent years, until tariff worries
spooked the bond market. But interest rates are still pretty low.

But it seems to be generally believed that that

Printing more money will cause interest rates to rise, so you owe more
on the remaining debt, and foreign debtors will want payment in more
    stable currencies.

Germany eliminated its internal debts by printing massive amounts of
money in 1924. But it wasn't worth the price.

Never heard of him. That would be for Churchill's seat in Parliament,
    right?

    Right.

Not a prominent person, except possibly in histories of the temperance movement.

    But useful as an example

And useful in more ways than one. Up here we tend to dump politicians
who lose two elections, sometimes even one, and replace them with
someone who is often worse. The temperance people in (I think) Dundee
stuck with their guy. All incumbents were in trouble in that election
but I suspect that if they had run a new face, Churchill would have won.

My point is that just talking about the economics won't work. The last
decade or two are proof enough of that. The problem is much more
fundamental, and it needs to be identified and addressed.

But I believe that meantime it helps not to go bankrupt. And talking
about sane fiscal policy at lest brings these ideas into the ken of
people who currently have no idea what sane fiscal policy looks like.

I think a point to keep a grasp on is that
government debt is a liability, one that
when created, doesn't go away by itself.
It sits there and costs you money each year.

Deficit is extra debt this year added onto
last year's debt. If you have a year without
any deficit, you still have the debt that
had already. And you had to pay interest
    on this debt.

    This description overlooks how economic
inflation makes debt smaller in practical
terms. If the national debt is so many
dollars and is equivalent to a very large
hill of beans, then one year later, the
same value in dollars usually is equal to a
slightly smaller hill of beans. So, inflation
makes debt go away. But this isn't a very
good solution, either. It's pretty much
The same as the other not-good solution.

It really should be. And often is, to a good approximation.

But given the tricks of accountancy, it's surprising how often
    it isn't.

At any rate, in my earlier post I intended to make a direct
comparison, deficit to deficit as a fraction of GNP, but for
some reason typed "debt" by the Canadian number.

If our debt was a mere 12.2% of GDP we'd have been in very
    good shape indeed.

If it was 12.2% today, our boasting about our financial acumen
would sicken people within a 2000 mile radius.

    but so did the debt.
