Genevieve Bujold was originally cast in the role, but quit after a day
and half of filming. Others were considered and some auditioned,
including Lindsay Wanger (The Bionic Woman), Erin Gray (Buck Rogers'
Colonel Deering), and Linda Hamilton (Terminator's Sarah O'Connor).

certainly never happened over and over again.

There was a short list of a handful of actresses. Bujold got the part and lasted two days.
It then came down to, which of the remaining actresses answered the phone. Wagner and Joanna Cassidy were out. Mulgrew didn’t have anything to do
that day so she answered the phone. She got the job and made them change
the characters name to her own so she wouldn’t miss her cues.
