The horrifying series returns, this time with 60s Doctor
Who. In this video, I take a look at the black and white era
of Doctor Who, starring William Hartnell as the First Doctor
and Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor. The black and
white picture has a way of making the early seasons of
Doctor Who a little unsettling, especially for younger
viewers, as the show is considered a family show.
I think the most interesting thing about the first season or
two is that the Doctor starts off as more of an anti-hero than
a hero: cowardly and self-serving. Ian is the hero. But by the
time Patrick Troughton takes over, the character has become
pretty much the one we know today - though of course each
incarnation has their own quirks.
Yeah, all the Doctors have their quirks and their eras are
all different in their own way. But watching the black and
white episodes certainly give the show a different atmosphere.
Watching the black and white stuff now can be like watching
a different programme at times, especially the early William
Hartnell historicals...
