Amazon already has pages to pre-order the Doctor Who spin-off series
"The War Between the Land and the Sea" in various disc formats ... BUT
since the show won't even air until next year, the pages say a release
date of "31 Dec. 2099" (probably the highest date their inventory
system will accept). :-\

Disney are not releasing the DVD the BBC are. As they do with seasons of Dr Who. They have not given up on physical releases. Yet.

Why would anyone want this show in SD? I'm still waiting
for the BBC to replace all the Doctor Who VHS tapes I bought
with the same episodes I paid for, but which they claim I
don't
own, in 576i25.

The BBC and others do still release disc versions of their shows.

When everyone can afford 1Gbps fibre to home and has their house all
wired up to a central hard drive there'll be no more need for physical
media. You'll then be able to download a 4K movie at Blu-ray quality in
about 20 minutes, which will be quicker than going down to the shops and
back to buy it. If you've only got fibre to cabinet it will probably
take at least 5 hours, so even streaming it at that quality is currently >impossible without fibre to home.
The stupid morons killed off Blu-ray the moment they imposed copy
protection on it, making it impossible for any modern PC to even play 4K >discs back without hacking them, since the hardware to decode the copy >protected disc was removed from every Intel CPU about a decade ago and
was never part of any AMD CPU to even begin with.

The BBC isn't a streaming platform per se, even though they
do own one... they also still produce physical releases.
(Especially as they know "Doctor Who" has a collecting fanbase.)
How long that situation goes on for remains to be seen. Whilst
people still buy them, the BBC will keep producing them. But I
have noticed the younger generation don't seem to be into buying
much in the way of physical media.

Buy a VHS/DVD combo and copy your VHS tapes to DVD...
Although, as a licence fee payer the BBC have supplied you with
an online source of [nearly] every "Doctor Who" episode with
their iPlayer service, so in a way they have provided you with
an upgraded viewing experience to your VHS tapes... free of
charge.

You won't find a new one of those anywhere (except maybe unopend boxes
on places like eBay). They stopped making them years ago. Even some
type of DVD player, i.e. a Blu-ray / 4K player, will be getting
difficult to find because companies are no longer making those either >(Panasonic might be the last one still making them).

Well, not free since it is part of the TV license.

I don't have a TV to play them back on.

There's no An Unearthly Child. There's no Terror of the Zygons. There's
