Jane Tranter Talks Doctor Who Future
------------------------------------
A decision aboutaDoctor Who'sanext season could still be
months away, with producer Jane Tranter revealing that
Disney does not have toamake the callauntil after the
upcomingaspin-offahas aired.
Since the release of the last season, culminating in
The Reality War, which ended with Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth
Doctoraregenerating into Billie Piper in a surprise twist,
fans have been waiting for news about whether Disney will
be recommissioning another season.
But we could be waiting a while longer as producer Tranter
has confirmed that, once the 26 episodes that Disney
initially commissioned have aired (which include the
spin-off), "then, and only then, does Disney+ have to make
a decision about whether or not they want to do more".
She added to The Royal Television Society: "I imagine, at
a time when Disney are having huge cuts themselves, and
there have been slashes in programme budgets, they're
looking to take their time to balance everything out and
decide what they want to do."
However, she went on to say: "At its heart, it's a BBC
show and it will keep going, one way or another."
While "The War Between the Land and the Sea" does not yet
have a release date, the BBC's Chief of Content, Kate
Phillips, recently revealed that it will air sometime in
2026.
It is important to note, though, that while the decision
doesn't have to come until after the spin-off, it could
still come sooner.
Thankfully, as Tranter pointed out, Doctor Who's future
does not depend on Disney's decision.
Recently speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Phillips
confirmed that the show will return to the BBCa"with or
without" Disney's involvement.
"Any Whovians out there, rest assured - Doctor Who is going
nowhere," she said. Disney has been a great partnership and
it continues with "The War Between The Land And The Sea"
next year but, going forward, with or without Disney,
Doctor Who will still be on the BBC."

Disney have already informed the BBC that the show has been cancelled,

Davies destroyed the entire franchise with the last 3 years of

There's no way that Doctor Who can recover from the irreparable damage

To be honest, there's nothing there that is actually news...
anyone using the term "I imagine" is basically saying they don't
know, which is either a blatant lie or disingenious at best. I
doubt Disney would be betting on "The War Between the Land and
the Sea" being a game changer for their deal with the BBC... if
two seasons of "Doctor Who" hasn't achieved great viewing
figures for Disney then what are they expecting from the
spin-off show? If it has achieved good viewing figures for them,
then they'd know what they want to do by now after having two
years of data to analyse.
My opinion is that most of what we're hearing from people on the
inside at the BBC/Bad Wolf (like RTD and Jane Tranter) is just
bullshit whilst they tread water and look for a new distribution
partner.

My money is on it being PR spin. Jane Tranter is only saying
something because she knows she has to, but yet she's saying
nothing at the same time. "Doctor Who will continue" just being
the new sound-bite to throw around...

It was an order for 26 episodes. What was termed at the time a
"first order" ... as there was an expectation there would be
more. I assume that expectation has now changed and the BBC know
that Disney will not be requiring any more episodes from them to
distribute on their streaming service.

^^ This I agree with.
It's all PR spin to make it look like they are doing something
without actually telling us anything. The BBC must have a fair
idea of what's going on. Disney are hardly just saying nothing
and waiting for a spin-off show to air in 2026 before deciding
to renew their multi-million pound deal for the international
streaming rights for "Doctor Who" episodes with the BBC, or not.
There would surely be interactions going on between those two
partners with feedback shared.
So, "Doctor Who will continue"... ok, when then? Give us some
idea... 2026? 2027? She doesn't actually know.
It's just mealy-mouthed nonsense like the politicians spout all
the time.
