they were supposed to look as depicted in the books and on the covers of
the books.

in the books, but people have simply gotten used to the actors in the movies.

There are abundant descriptions of the characters in the books and
references to exactly what they look like. Hermione is a representation
of JK Rowling herself, a self insert, and has red/strawberry blonde hair
and fair skin just like Rowling and you can see her face change colour
when her cheeks turn red.

The character also calls herself a mud blood in the books. That term was
never intended to infer that she was mixed race or non-British.
