Let's get real. The only reason NATO even pretends to care about spending targets is because Trump called them out. Before him, most members were freeloading years delinquent on the 2% benchmark while hiding behind U.S. strength like scared little kids clutching Uncle Sam's coattails.
Now the same crowd wants to talk about a 5% norm? Please. They barely respected the 2% until Trump showed up with a ledger and a spine. Rutte's position means nothing when the only reason they're paying at all is because someone finally had the balls to say pay up or piss off.
And now we're supposed to be shocked that Trump says the 5% doesn't apply to us? Damn right it doesn't. We've been carrying NATO on our back for decades while they lecture us with empty platitudes and pre-written summit scripts.
The 5% proposal was never serious it's a European fantasy. And with Trump tossing cold reality on the table, they're suddenly scrambling like ants under a magnifying glass.
