I just watched "Artifact", a great documentary about 30 Seconds to Mars
and their struggles with Virgin/EMI records during the making of one of
their records. When your record label, who is responsible for your
career success, sues you (while paying out nothing for a career total 15 million record sales), something is definitely screwed up.

That's on my watchlist too. Aren't musicians becoming more
savvy with establishing "guaranteed" returns these days?

Isn't there some kind of advance payment arrangement as there
    is in book publishing?

The documentary is pretty accurate as well and tells the way it just is.

Yes, but the amount of overhead that comes out of their cut is crazy.
It used to be that they only took a cut of sales, so bands made their
money on merchandise and tours. Now contracts are written to include a
cut of those, too, for the record label.

The labels are desperate. You could promote your music on YouTube,
Instagram and TikTok, sell digital and physical media on Soundcloud or
bandcamp, or if you were a big artist, create your own label.
