• GoldED goes Open Source!

    Hello Andrei,

    Why forget them?

Anything related to that topic needs to be leveled from its source.

GoldEd started as a project in Russia. We should at least give them
    credit for that, no?

No. Golded was a commercial shareware created and published by Odinn Sorensen.

And Russia does not have any credits in it. Odin Sorensen was Danish but that does not give Denmark credits. It was Alexander S. Aganichev who did the initial golded fork on github. Later the project was maintained by Stas Degteff, Micheal Dukelsky and others that i don't remember but they are all credited in the list of sourceforge project members and githubs contributors.

    Regards

    * Subj : GoldED goes Open Source! ============================================================================= Hello All.

    GoldED goes Open Source!

The final 3.00 Public Release version will be released soon, along with full source code (for both 3.0.0 and the in-development 4.x), under a license that meets the Open Source Definition (http://www.opensource.org). The license is currently being worked out, but will likely resemble the MozPL (http://www.mozilla.org/NPL/MPL-1.0.html) a lot.

The opening of the source does not mean that I'm stopping development of GoldED, but because of changed circumstances in my life, I can no longer spend as much time as I would like on development. Not even fixing the simple bugs and easy features. Additionally, I have now become economically independent of income from GoldED key sales. But most importantly, over the years I have become more and more facinated with Open Source software such as Linux, and promised myself that one day when I either became unable to develop GoldED sufficiently and/or I became financially independent of income from GoldED, I would release the sourcecode. This is the promise I'm now honoring.

What will happen next is this:

    * GoldED 3.00 Public Release. Binaries for all the platforms as usual, except that the key checker, nag screens etc. are removed.

    * The version number scheme is changed to "linux kernel style", such as 3.0.0, where the first number is the major version, the second is even (0,2,4,..) for stable versions or uneven (1,3,5,..) for potentially unstable versions, the last number is the release number.

    * The source for the stable binaries is released as 3.0.0. A new source branch is created with version number 3.1.0, where all further development on the 3.x.x versions will happen. Well-tested bugfixes might be transferred to the 3.0.x branch, so that 3.0.x will be improved in a stable manner.

    * Source will be made available both as tarballs, built on a regular basis, and via a CVS server. The CVS server will be read-only to most, but a core group of developers will get access to committing source directly to the CVS. At this moment, the core group consists of myself and Dirk A. Mueller, but we are looking forward to opening up for more, when we see quality patches from interested developers. We will be accepting patches for the source, but we cannot guarantee speedy inclusion (or even final acceptance) in the official source. In the mean time you can of course run your own patched version and even distribute binaries, as long as you make your patches available under an Open Source license and clearly mark your version as non-official.

Watch this space for more details on the source at a later date.

All versions up to and including 3.00.Beta5 are shareware, but keys to the shareware versions are no longer sold. The new 4.x keys are unfortunately no longer relevant, since future versions will not include any key checker code. I'm very sorry that people paid faithfully for the 4.x key upgrades and now won't get exactly what they paid for. I could not predict back then what would happen (I got a well-paid job and don't have to worry about income from now on). I had to assume that I would need additional income for at least couple of years more, so I could not stop sales back then. If you are feeling cheated, please remember that I have specifically stated seveal times that nobody HAD to pay for an upgrade before 4.x was actually released. I changed the key system and pricing back then to simplify the price system from a complicated "pay more for each platform" to a "one key fits all" and even lowered the price and opened for easy registration/upgrade with creditcard on the internet. It was nice that this triggered a burst of upgrades to the new key and more registrations, but it was never intended (as some might suspect) as a way to squeeze more money out of users.

If you registered or upgraded recently, and now feel that this is just too much and want your money back, please reconsider. I'll be doing a lot of work to ensure that this Open Source project gets going, integrating patches and so on.
In some ways it's even more work than before, but I'll be happy to do it, because GoldED will be improved faster by the patch contributions than if I had to do all the work myself. Please consider your registration or upgrade as a contribution to help me do this work, and rest assured that you will now be getting a lot more than you bargained for. If you still want your money back, I'm prepared to offer a refund. A little known fact is that I have a 90 days satisfaction guarantee, as stated in the license.doc in the 2.50 distribution (see excerpt below). I'm extending this guarantee back to the date when I started selling 4.x keys. If you still want the refund, please write to me at refund@goldware.dk and I'll arrange the refund. Please be patient. I cannot guarantee that I can give you the refund right here and now, since I have other bills to pay, and for economical reasons I'll probably want to wait until I can process all refunds in one fell swoop (and save on currency conversion costs). Please don't ask the reg.sites for the refund, they already sent the money to me. Those who paid using the ShareIt service and still haven't got their key, please ask ShareIt to refund your money NOW. I already told them a month ago to stop selling it, but apparently they kept selling it even after that :-( If you paid via ShareIt AND got your key from me, but now want the refund, please contact me at refund@goldware.dk.

    3. Satisfaction Guarantee. If you are dissatisfied with any product
you buy from us under this Agreement for any reason, you may
return it at any time up to 90 days after purchase and we will
give you a full refund. Refunds will be based on the price you
paid, less shipping costs. You must contact us before returning
any product for a refund. This satisfaction guarantee does not
apply to multi-system licenses for more than 10 computers, or to
purchases of more than 10 individual copies at one time.

But again, PLEASE reconsider any thought of wanting a refund. It's such a small amount and you'll just be slowing down development and thus making me and other users less happy.

Thanks a lot, Kai for the detailed explanation.
I made a confusion between GoldEd and GoldEd+

    Best regards,
