I think pruning the backbone.na file and merging and removing 1/3rd of the forums might be one idea to promote quality.

The problem with Fidonet echos is that not all BBSes represent
them. Sysops pick and choose what echos they want to carry -
which is fine - but when a user (non-sysop) would visit and see
a limited list, it does not speak for what is available out
    there.

Perhaps instead of pruning the list of echos, make the list
available for users to browse independent of which BBS they
    choose to stay with.

The list of echos ought to be made easily accessible/searchable
    at each BBS.

Why not just use my .NA file-set to determine which dead areas to remove from your system?

Perhaps instead of pruning the list of echos, make the list available for users to browse independent of which BBS they choose to stay with.

Unless it includes where the echos are located (which they can't?), it wouldn't be much help.
