American Airlines has operated its first commercial flight with the Airbus A321XLR. The Extra Long Range variant of the A321neo is actually intended for long-distance flights, but the American airline is initially deploying the type on domestic routes.
The A321XLR has a range of over 8,700 kilometers, making it easy to fly from the US to destinations in Europe. This is happening: starting March 8, 2028, American Airlines will operate the type between New York and Edinburgh.
But first, the new addition will fly domestically. On Thursday, an A321XLR carrying 150 passengers departed from New York to Los Angeles. Next summer, flights between Boston and Los Angeles and between New York and San Francisco will be added.
American Airlines' fleet, which consists of approximately one thousand aircraft, currently includes two A321XLRs. The airline has ordered a total of fifty.
Compared to the standard A321neo that American Airlines operates, the A321XLR has fewer seats: 155 instead of 196.
A striking feature is the twenty "Flagship Suites" at the very front, which allow Business Class passengers to lie back and relax.
