Greetings to all listeners of WIA National News this week.

On behalf of the WIA Board of Directors, this is WIA President Scott
Williams, VK3KJ and I hope this announcement finds you and your family safe
and well.


Several Directors of the WIA, namely Peter Clee VK8ZZ and Lee Moyle VK3GK recently attended the Japan Amateur Radio League Ham Fair in Tokyo. Around 40,000 individuals attended the event, and this year marked a special milestone, the 100-year anniversary celebration of the JARL.


At the JARL 100-year celebration dinner, attended by around 30 amateur radio associations and societies from around the world, the WIA represented through Peter Clee and Lee Moyle presented a special recognition plaque to Mr Koji Morita JA5SUD , the President of the JARL to congratulate them on 100 years
of service to Amateur Radio in Japan.

The WIA recognises the tremendous role the JARL has played in supporting Amateur Radio in Japan, with around 381,000 licensed operators.


The WIA will shortly be posting some social media and a news item on the presentation to the JARL.


Finally, just a reminder that on Sunday afternoon 20th September at 4.00pm,
the WIA will hold its Affiliated Club President briefing. The briefing is
open to Executive Committee members of all Affiliated Clubs. Invitations have gone out with the agenda, and we look forward to welcoming everyone later today. These briefings are important and provide a forum for the WIA Board to share various initiatives with Affiliated Clubs and in return receive, feedback.

AUSTRALIANA

Late patching of Metabase SQLi bug claims Sydney's Mathspace.

SQLi is a security vulnerability that happens when an application injects user-typed input directly into a database command.

Attackers exploited a critical Metabase vulnerability to breach Mathspace
after the company failed to patch its self-hosted instance following an
August 7 advisory.


Stolen data includes user IDs, usernames, first and last names, email
addresses and other login-related information for students, staff, parents
and guardians.


Only Australian and New Zealand users were affected, and Mathspace has
notified authorities including the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

Defence GPS Jamming trial

If you're in the Jervis Bay area of VK2 until September 25, you might experience some disruptions to your GPS receives, including the one in your mobile phone.


Defence are conducting, what they are calling "GNSS Jamming effects" at
Jervis Bay airfield in Nowra.

Directional jamming antennas will be directed away from major town centres
and cities, and will aim to minimise inadvertent exposure to aviation.

The Dayton Amateur Radio Association has named Hazel Everetts, N 8 PTL
as General Chair of the 2027 Dayton Hamvention.

Hazel is the first woman to hold the top spot in Hamventions 75-year history and has been a Hamvention volunteer since she was first licensed in 1989 and has served as Assistant General Chair for the past two years.


As we are all aware, or should be aware here in Australia this month is FIRE PROTECTION MONTH.

BUT

In the USA and Canada they have a week, and it's the first full week of October.


This year, Fire Prevention Week will be from Sunday October 4th through Saturday October 10th.


In Ontario a special event call sign VE3FIRE, operating as a Wild Card
station, and in the US there will be stations using the call signs

N0F through N9F along with KF2IRE, another Wild Card station.

All twelve stations are working to highlight fire safety regarding the
charging of lithium-ion batteries during Fire Prevention Week.

While this event is not a contest, a downloadable printed certificate will be available for those who work ten or more of the twelve stations.

Revitalising targeted radio broadcasting: the German Army modernises the transmission facilities of the Bundeswehrs Operational Communications Centre.


Even in the digital age, radio remains important to the Bundeswehr.

This capability of the Army is to be maintained and expanded in the coming years. To this end, the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr has commissioned the Bremen-based company FHF to carry out a comprehensive refurbishment of the transmission cabins.


The mobile radio transmitters consist of transmission cabins, equipment
teams, power generators and a mobile 25-metre antenna.


As part of the modernisation, transmissions will in future not only take
place in the FM frequency band, but will also utilise digital and, at the
same time, more efficient Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) for the transmission of information.


Also in Germany, their Automatic Safety Alert (ASA) went on air across
Germany via the DAB+ network from 10 September.


The system can wake up certified DAB+ radios from standby or sleep mode to broadcast high-priority safety warnings.


WorldDAB, and Digitalradio Deutschland developed the standard prompted by severe events like the Ahr Valley floods, German safety authorities,

It relies on robust DAB+ radio broadcast towers instead of cellular or Wi-Fi networks, making it highly resilient during natural disasters or power

Precise Geofencing: Transmissions use regional location codes so that
warnings play only in the specific areas affected by an emergency.


The International Amateur Radio Union general conference is taking from 19-23 September in Vienna, Austria. Representatives of national societies from
across Region 1 will meet to discuss 100 papers on a wide range of amateur radio topics.


A significant body of work has been undertaken by RSGB volunteers and specialists to prepare for the conference, and the RSGB has submitted ten papers, making it the largest contributor of any of the member societies.

OCTOBER 3-4 OCEANA SSB CONTEST AND OCEANA CW CONTEST is OCTOBER 10 - 11

This is Grant, VK5GR, on behalf of the Oceania DX Contest Committee

Its that time of year again, as we are only 14 days away from the start of
the biggest Oceania focused DX contest of the year! The 83rd Oceania DX
(OCDX) contest will once more run on the first two weekends of October, with the Phone contest running for 24hrs starting from 06:00 UTC on Saturday 3rd October, and the CW contest running for 24hrs starting at 06:00 UTC on
Saturday the 10th of October.


Whether youre a newcomer or seasoned contester, or have only a modest
station, the 2026 contest should be another exciting event.


The focus of the contest is on promoting HF contacts between stations in Oceania and the rest of the world. For operators outside the region, its a chance to work many Oceania stations, from remote Pacific islands to the outback of Australia and jungles of Indonesia. For Oceania-based operators,
its a fantastic opportunity to make lots of DX QSOs as stations from the rest of the world turn their beams towards Oceania searching for you!


2026 is the 83rd birthday of the contest. Formerly known as the VK DX Contest and VK/ZL Contest, the contest was first run from 1935 through 1938 and then re-started in 1948, shortly after amateur licences were re-instated post-WW2. The contest has grown into a signature event for operators across Oceania and around the world, combining DX excitement, technical capability and operating skills.


So, save the contest dates in your calendar, warm up the rig, tune the antennas, brush up on your operating skills, and join amateurs across the
globe in October to make this another amazing OCDX party!

This wireless station is operating to mark the group's 100th anniversary.

Look for activity on the HF, VHF, and UHF bands using CW, digital modes, SSB and satellites.

12th IARU Region 3 ARDF Championships will take place the 9th to the 14th of November in Ryuo-Town, Shiga prefecture of Japan. The name Ryuo literally
means Dragon King.


To commemorate of this ARDF Championship, they have announced a special
event station prior to and during championships. Believe it or not it's just come to our attention this station has been operating for the past 5 months!


This station call sign is 8 J 3 ARDF and it may be possible for you to
operate it as a guest operator during the actual ARDF competition period.


A couple of 'notes' for competitors are worth reiterating, first aid
facilities will be available at the finish areas for all competitions.
There is no cost to participants for on-site minor treatment, however the
cost of ambulance transportation, emergency department visits, or clinic
visits will be the participant's responsibility.

The accommodation will be organized in the Seinen-no-Shiro training and education center, no single rooms, but big rooms (max 20 persons room).
No showers are available in the room, but public big baths/showers are available for men and women separately.

Please bring indoor shoes/sandal along with you, since no outdoor shoes
allowed in the accommodation facility and smoking is banned.

The BOOP! mission was launched on a scientific balloon from NASAs launch facility in New Mexico on Sept. 13.


This was the second year forNASAs Balloon Program OfficesBalloon Optimization Opportunity Payload, orBOOP!,which allowsmultiple technology instruments to
be tested during flight for future missions.The mission carried experiments
to test compact tools for future planetary exploration, map high-energy space radiation, and evaluate a newly developed flight camera system.


The balloon and payload reached a float altitude of around 123,000 feet, and flew for a total of 4 hours, 29 minutes.

Name Submission Deadline

The Send Your Name into Space campaign for the Ioffe-1 is active.
The Ioffe-1 is a scientific and educational nanosatellite.

Participants have until October 15, 2026, to register online. Submissions can include a name, photograph, or drawing. All materials will be saved on a physical digital storage device and will be loaded onto the Ioffe-1
satellite.


Once in orbit the nanosatellite will join the Supernova Hunters
constellation.


This campaign builds on previous successessuch as the 2025 campaign where
7,887 names and over 3,500 images from 117 countries were uploaded.
Sixty-seven top entries were selected for regular transmission from the 239Alferov satellite.


For the current campaign, Mission Control Center specialists will select the 100 best hand-drawn works. These will be broadcast to Earth via amateur radio after launch.

Fuel Savings Double Potential Lifetime for NASAs Roman Mission

Roman was designed for a five-year primary mission, plus a five-year extended mission a 10-year fuel budget in total. Because fuel is the observatorys primary consumable resource, any fuel savings could enable additional years
of observations beyond the 10-year design life.


NOW the results are in:

NASAs Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescopes very accurate first mid-course correction, along with other fuel savings, are expected to more than double again the missions potential operational lifetime.


As a result of exquisite planning by their orbital dynamics team, Roman has fuel for at least 22 years of potential science operations, said Jamie Dunn, center director at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center.


The added life comes from the first mid-course corrections accuracy, extra
fuel added prior to launch, and anticipated results from Romans upcoming
second mid-course correction and orbital insertion.

Indonesia is facing severe forest fires, a capsized ferry, and a volcanic eruption.


Wild and Toxic Haze Wide spread forest and peatland fires are burning in Sumatra, and South Papua. Smoke exposure has affected more than 12.5 million people across seven Indonesian provinces.


Respiratory infections linked to the heavy smoke have risen past 113,000
cases. Toxic haze also drifted into Malaysia, Singapore, and thePhilippines.

The Virgo Transport 8 overturned in rough weather and 3-meter waves on September 13. The ferry was carrying over 240 people from Java to Borneo.
and 129 people remain missing in Masalembo waters.

Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption The volcano erupted on the evening of September
5 in the Sunda Strait. Thick ash clouds caused temporary safety closures at major regional airports.

A quick reminder to all Clubs that the WIA Presidents Webinar will be held
this afternoon at 4:00 PM AEST.


All club Presidents were sent a MS Teams invitation including the meeting agenda earlier this week. These webinars are very popular with clubs, and as always, I encourage all club Presidents to join in for the benefit of their respective membership. VK2 Tuesday 22nd SEPTEMBER

At September's HADARC meeting Mick VK2CMP will give a presentation on his
23 cm portable moonbounce (or EME) station.

This consists of a 2.4 metre folding dish, a W6PQL homebrew PA, a LinkRF antenna tracking solution, and a stabilised IC-9700. Mick will then set up
the station.


It provides excellent performance on both digital modes and CW, and demonstrates that a modest station can work DX off the moon. The time is
8:00 pm at Mt Colah Community Centre, on Tuesday 22nd.

With just over two months to go, Tassie Ham-E-Con 2026 is already shaping
up as a genuinely national and international gathering of the amateur radio community. Registrations are open, and we already have attendees booked
from every Australian state as well as New Zealand. This years theme, Hack
the Ether: Education, Ingenuity, Connection, celebrates what amateur radio
does best: experimenting, learning, sharing ideas and finding ever more inventive ways of getting signals from one place to another.

The conference brings together amateurs, makers, educators, communicators
and technical explorers for a fully catered weekend built around four
streams: Hack the Mind, exploring education and learning; Hack the System, showcasing experimentation and ingenuity; Hack the Culture, looking at community, engagement and connection; and Hack the Future, examining leadership, purpose and where amateur radio heads next. Therell also be pre-conference and post-conference activities, making this much more than simply two days sitting in a theatre listening to presentations.

Tassie Ham-E-Con 2026 will be held on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November at
the Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre on the University of Tasmanias Sandy Bay
campus in Hobart. With registrations already stretching across Australia
and over the Tasman, and still two months to go, its looking like being
quite a weekend. The preliminary program is available and bookings are open

VK - WIA Affiliated Clubs Presidents' Webinar 6 December (vk7tw) Submitting news items

If you would like to submit news items for possible inclusion
in the VK1WIA broadcasts, please email your item in text to nationalnews@wia.org.au and don't JUST send url's links or
posters, but take the time to pen YOUR contribution.

To submit audio, email nationalnews@wia.org.au
and send BOTH the audio and the text

We would appreciate items certainly no longer than 1.5 mts in
length as we only have a half hour.

Remember the sooner you submit material the more the
likelihood of it being broadcast in the very next edition of
WIA National News.

Each recorded item will only be broadcast once, if you want a couple
of mentions, please submit different slants to keep your
event 'fresh' and always if the news room is to read your
item --- write it in the 3rd person. (First if YOU are
reading your own item). If you are mentioning your own name / call
in the story, say something like "and myself, Pat, vk11abc"

A reminder when supplying HamFest info we obviously can't
plug DEALS from commercial traders "on air", but we at the
WIA will put your supporters 'goods' in this text edition
"no worries."

We will not give blatant 'plugs' to raffles, be it raffles
at the event or "on-line".

to unsubscribe from. Send unsubscribe to the list
unsubscribe address vk1wia-news-leave@lists.wia.org.au
You will be sent a confirmation mail and must follow the
instructions given in that mail to complete the
unsubscription.

Once your unsubscription has been processed, you will
probably receive a message confirming your unsubscription
from the list and at that point you should stop receiving
messages.
