On behalf of the WIA Board of Directors, this is WIA President Scott
Williams, VK3KJ and I hope this announcement finds you and your family safe
and well.


Just a few things from me this week.

The WIA has recently introduced a process through WIA Affiliated Clubs to
help address WIA members that may be facing a level of financial hardship and are struggling to pay their annual WIA membership fee. It was recently discussed at the Affiliated Clubs meeting, and it is a simple process where your club can submit an application on your behalf for subsidised membership.


This then entitles the applicant to a $50.00 subsidy for membership. To
pursue this subsidy, please approach your Club Executive and complete a
simple application form. At this stage, this new initiative is running to 31 December 2026 and will then be reviewed.


The WIA would like to thank one of our very loyal WIA members who made a kind donation to enable us to introduce this initiative. The individual would like to remain anonymous however, we thank you sincerely for your generosity.


The WIA this year will be sending two individuals to RadComms 2026 to
represent the WIA. RadComms is the ACMA biggest spectrum management event and is held every second year. This year, it will be held at the RACV Club in Melbourne on 25th and 26th August and both Justin Giles-Clark (VK7TW) and
Peter Young (VK3MV) will attend and represent the WIA.


RadComms is a wonderful opportunity to explore current and emerging
challenges, hear about major issues and developments from Government and industry that relate to spectrum management.


I know both Justin and Peter are looking forward to attending and continuing
to strongly represent the WIA. The WIA places high importance on discussions involving spectrum management, as it is critical to the future of our hobby.


Finally, the WIA is in the process of implementing Discord for Affiliated Clubs. Discord is a collaboration platform and facilitates online discussions via chat groups and online forums.


The WIA recognise that we need better ways to communicate, both between the
WIA and Affiliated Clubs, but also between Clubs. We are currently
structuring and trialling Discord in the background and will very soon roll this out to all Affiliated Clubs.

This is Angelo Giuffre, VK2NWT with advice of an upcoming ARISS contact.

This coming Monday, the 3rd of August students from the Geneva Christian College, Latrobe Tasmania, will talk live with Astronaut Sophie Adenot KJ5LTN onboard the International Space Station. Scheduled contact is for 10:00:00
UTC or 8 PM AEST.


The ground station for this contact will be Claudio IK1SLD who is located in northern Italy who will supply the audio from this contact via the Ham Radio Telebridge.


This is a rescheduled contact from an original one that happened in early
June which was unfortunately plagued by an audio malfunction. We are very grateful to ARISS and NASA for making this new contact happen so quickly
again for this school.


You can listen to this contact live from anywhere in the world via EchoLink *HAM* Node 69556, and IRLP Node 9556 as well as a range of other linked VoIP modes. Please visit the anzel.radio website for the full list of all modes

FROM AUSTRALIA TO THE WORLD.

Australian quantum technology company QuantX Labs has achieved a historic
world first by successfully commissioning an optical frequency comb in orbit.


An optical frequency comb? It is a laser source that acts as a ruler for
light, producing a spectrum of discrete, equally spaced frequency lines. It bridges the gap between high-speed optical light waves and standard electronics.


Supported by the Australian Space Agencys Moon to Mars Demonstrator Program, the payload launched aboard a SpaceX rideshare mission from California.


This crucial milestone validates years of research, proving that advanced Australian quantum technology can survive launch and operate reliably in the harsh space environment. By converting ultra-stable optical signals into electronic timing data, the frequency comb acts as a vital building block for next-generation optical atomic clocks.


QuantX Labs target a full optical atomic clock launch in 2027.

Ultimately, these ultra-precise space-based timing systems will greatly
enhance positioning, navigation, and critical ground infrastructure like communications and financial networks.

WHAT ON EARTH?
GOOGLE EARTH.

Come next year, those looking to explore the globe virtually via Google Earth will have to do so on their smartphone or from within their browser, as the search giant has decided to discontinue the services desktop client in June 2027.


The good news is, the lights wont be going out immediately. According to a
post made on Google Earths official support community by Community Manager,
the June cut-off date applies to NEW downloads, but nothing is changing on
the backend, so existing installs will continue to work.


Now, while its safe to assume that youll have little trouble finding an alternate download of the Google Earth client for years to come, theres no telling how long before they quit working. It probably goes without saying
that Google wont be providing updates to the software anymore, so if theres
any kind of breaking change on either the API side or at the OS level, thats the end of the road. Theres always a chance that Google will decide to
release the source and turn the whole thing over to the community but we wouldnt hold our breath on that one.

TRAINING IN EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS

For this story we are off to the Caribbean

On July 22, 19 persons from the public and private sector successfully graduated from an intense three day course that earned each participant a Technician Class Amateur radio license.


Three day course covered areas including Ohms Law, Frequency allocations for radio amateurs, radio etiquette, basic electricity, and antenna theory and construction among other areas.


During the session focusing on antennas, students used a formula taught to
make and test a High Frequency (HF) 1/4 wave dipole for the 40 Meter amateur radio band and actually tested the antenna making contact with several stations. Students were also given the opportunity to use VHF radios during a mini simulation while conducting training in emergency message handling.


On the final day all 19 participants successfully completed a test
administered by the NTRC, allowing them to legally operate on frequencies allocated licensed amateur radio operators. Executive Director and Immediate Past President of the Youlou Amateur Radio Association YARA , Donald De
Riggs (J88CD) who conducted the training course.


YARA is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization based in St. Vincent and
the Grenadines that provides critical emergency communications, disaster preparedness training, and amateur radio education.


The test was administered by the NTRC with Mr.Cyron Cyrus as invigilator. As
an incentive to the new radio operators, NEMO will provide each successful participant with a VHF handheld radio upon receiving their Technician Class amateur radio license.

PHNOM PENH

International radio and satellite experts from Japan, France and Australia
are sharing their expertise in training sessions for students.


The sessions at the National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia (NPIC) are
open to every student eager to explore space technology and radio communication. They are run with the cooperation of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPTC) and the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia (TRC). Students learn about the fast-paced world of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and get involved by building and using homemade antenna systems to track these fast-moving satellites across the sky.

PHILLIPINES

Amateur radio volunteers from DX2AFP, alongside personnel from the United States Marine Corps, voluntarily deployed emergency radio equipment at the Philippine Red Cross Command Centre in Laoag City as Severe Tropical Storm Kiyapo continued to damage several parts of Northern Luzon.


The deployment was aimed at strengthening emergency communication
capabilities and ensuring reliable, redundant communication links should conventional telecommunications be disrupted by the severe weather.


According to the organizers, the installed amateur radio systems serve as an auxiliary communication network, allowing responders to rapidly relay
critical information among disaster response teams, humanitarian
organizations, and local government authorities.

ARRL has introduced a new 10-Band DXCC Award plaque, recognizing radio
amateurs who have achieved DXCC on all ten HF amateur bands from 160 through
6 meters.


The new award celebrates the accomplishment of having confirmed at least 100 DXCC entities on each of the following bands:


160, 80, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, 10, and 6 meters (excludes 60 meters).

Eligibility is based on the total QSLs reflected in your ARRL Logbook of The World (LoTW) account.

International Dog Day and International Cat Day Special Event.

An international group of operators will be on the air throughout the month
in a mutual celebration of International Cat Day and International Dog Day.


The combined special event stations will be active from the 1st of August through to the 31st of August, to call attention to the needs of abandoned, abused and homeless pets around the world and to advocate for adoption and humane treatment. In the spirit of friendship and the shared love of animals, they will be looking to raise awareness and hear one anothers stories.

AUGUST 8 IS ONE "PURRFECT DAY"

Cat Pix on the Air (CPOTA) 2026 will celebrate International Cat Day by transmitting images of cats via SSTV.


The internet was made for sharing funny cat pictures and movies. On August
8th, International cat day, so will the radio waves! Ham radio amateurs will celebrate this day with a special SSTV event using cat pictures only.


This contest will score the number of QSOs made by each operator. Special callsigns PD6MEOW (Netherlands) and N1C (US) are already registered.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- ASTRONOMY (and Wireless Weather)

The US state of Nevada is poised to become home to what's being called the world's most sensitive radio telescope.


Construction is about to begin for a radio telescope known as the Deep
Synoptic Array considered the most sensitive of its kind to date. The project is being led by the California Institute of Technology, and is planned for
the Nevada desert. According to the Caltech website, the telescope recently passed its final design review, allowing building to begin on what will ultimately be a collection of 1,650 radio dishes covering an area of 12 by 10
miles, or 20 by 16 kilometres.


Scientists expect the Deep Synoptic Array to have the ability to collect and identify more radio sources in any given day than any radio telescopes currently in operation. The researchers said they expect its initial survey
to note nearly 1 billion objects emitting radio waves. Its special functions will include the study of pulsars, black holes and fast radio bursts and it raises hopes that it will detect other transient events that have gone undetected until now.

Jodrell Bank, Britains most famous radio astronomy observatory, with a
history spanning nearly eight decades, is on the verge of closure. Under a decision by the government agency UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the facility is set to lose its entire annual funding of 2.8 million. Unless scientists and management can secure alternative investment, all observations at the site will cease on April 1, 2028.

Mission Skybridge is planned for launch on 17 October 2026.

This year the focus will be on testing airborne amateur radio technologies
that may assist SARL HAMNET (The South African equivalent of our WICEN)

during disaster response and search-and-rescue operations.

The mission will test Meshtastic on two frequencies,LoRa APRS,
LoRa point-to-point links,2 m APRS,

Amazon's Leo proposes satellite constellation for direct-to-phone service

Partnered with NBN Co here in in Australia,

Amazon's Leo has proposed a constellation of around 5000 satellites to
provide direct-to-device voice and data connectivity, joining a growing race among satellite operators to beam mobile services directly to smartphones.


The proposed network would provide voice, messaging, data and emergency services in areas beyond the reach of terrestrial cellular networks, with satellite deployment beginning in 2028 and use the mobile satellite spectrum
of Globalstar which Amazon agreed to acquire earlier this year.


Amazon Leo has announced partnerships with Vodafone, DirecTV, South African company Herotel and Australias NBN Co.

Hi, Im Richard VK2SKY.

Previously, I mentioned Winlink and how its useful for emergency
communications when you need to bypass damaged local infrastructure.


A large part of Winlinks power comes from gateways, which can route Winlink radio traffic via the internet. We have a few Winlink gateways in Australia, but they are mostly around the coast, and there are none yet in VK7 or VK8.


While HF Winlink gateways are useful for long haul traffic, VHF and UHF gateways can be very useful to bypass smaller scale outages. Theyre also
quick and easy to set up: a Raspberry Pi Zero, a radio interface or packet
TNC, and a spare mobile radio can do the job quite nicely. You can be online and part of the global Winlink network in just an hour or two. It may be time to dust off your old packet radio gear and put it to good use!


Last weeks news mentioned HamGPT, an online AI co-pilot customised for Radio Amateurs. All well and good when you have internet or mobile access, but what if youre in a remote area with no communications except your HF radio?
Winlink to the rescue, once again!


Bart ZL4FOX, known for SARtrack, the search and rescue coordination software, has recently created an Amateur Radio-oriented AI bot that is accessible via Winlink. Simply send a Winlink message to AIHELP with the Subject line AI, followed by your question, for example: AI what bands are open between VK2
and Europe right now?


The Winlink Development Team liked it so much, that they have built it into
the Winlink Express Catalog. Give it a try!

station at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's weather monitoring
facility until late October or early November.


He expects to become increasingly active as VK 9 WX in the coming weeks

Young Ham of the Year Recognition for Satellite Operator

The 2026 winner of the Bill Pasternak WA6ITF Memorial Amateur Radio Newsline Young Ham of the Year Award is Carsten Glasbrenner, KQ4SJM, of e, Florida.


Carsten, age 14, who holds a General Class license earned in May 2024, took
his Technician test at the age of 11. He is the son of Drew who

is currently the president of AMSAT.

Award committee chairman, Mark Abramowicz, NT3V, reported that Carsten was almost speechless when he learned in a recent phone call he had been selected as this years YHOTY award. Carsten says he was also pretty nervous making his first satellite contact just a month after earning his General and called on dad for some help.


Since that first contact, Carsten has well over 100 satellite contacts in the log and has activated a number of rare grid squares. He begins high school
this fall and says his interest in kit-building, especially soldering components, might set him on the path to electrical engineering.

We've mentioned Ben KC3ZPQ previously BUT his awards and prize money just
KEEPS ON GROWING, now some $15,000.


This 16-year-old Maryland high school student in the USA has won the ARRLs annual Student Coding Competition for helping to make it easier for amateur radio operators to prepare for the ARRLs license examination.


Ben Leovy, a sophomore at Howard High School in Ellicott City, Maryland, won this years competition for his design and development of a mobile application intended to support licensing applicants as they study to take the exam.


The competition judges chose Leovys application for the award based on usability, clarity, stability, and code quality.


Leovy will receive a $5000 cash prize for his win, as well as a new MacBook Neo. In addition, the ARRL has offered him a consulting project for the

The ARRLs annual Student Coding Competition is part of the organizations ongoing efforts to develop the next generation of radio amateurs. Similar
ARRL initiatives include its Collegiate Amateur Radio Program and its
Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology.

The final final

Kiyoshi Kan Mizoguchi, JA1BK, a well-known DXer, DXpeditioner, CQ DX Hall of Fame member, and former Director of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 3, has passed away at the age of 93. He was a member of the
ARRL Maxim Society at the Fellow Class.


First licensed in 1952, Mizoguchi became involved in the creation of IARU Region 3, which covers most of Asia and the Pacific, and served as a Director from 1968 to 1975.


His interest in DXing included both chasing and being the DX, and he is credited with identifying new entities and helping put them on the air for
the first time. Some of those places include the Marquesas, the Australs, the Chesterfield Islands, Ducie Island, and Swains Isla

posters, but take the time to pen YOUR contribution.

We would appreciate items certainly no longer than 1.5 mts in
length as we only have a half hour.

Remember the sooner you submit material the more the
likelihood of it being broadcast in the very next edition of
WIA National News.

Each recorded item will only be broadcast once, if you want a couple
of mentions, please submit different slants to keep your
event 'fresh' and always if the news room is to read your
item --- write it in the 3rd person. (First if YOU are
reading your own item). If you are mentioning your own name / call
in the story, say something like "and myself, Pat, vk11abc"

A reminder when supplying HamFest info we obviously can't
plug DEALS from commercial traders "on air", but we at the
WIA will put your supporters 'goods' in this text edition
