  • AMD First Entered The CPU Market 50 Years Ago

From Lawrence D?Oliveiro@3:633/10 to All on Mon Oct 27 23:04:34 2025
    The subhead <https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/amd-first-entered-the-cpu-market-with-reverse-engineered-intel-8080-clone-50-years-ago-the-am9080-cost-50-cents-apiece-to-make-but-sold-for-usd700>
says ?In 1975, AMD could make these processors for 50 cents and sell
them for $700, providing a great financial springboard to establish
the company in PC CPU making?.

That sounds rather beguiling, until you recognize the economics of
chip making, which applied then and still apply now: the fab for
making those chips cost millions back then, and billions now. So even
at that $700, you still had to sell at least tens or hundreds of
thousands before you began to show an overall profit.
