• Visual C++ Redistributable 2015

From micky@3:633/280.2 to All on Mon Jun 30 23:25:13 2025
Is there such a thing as " Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio
    2015 "?

Or is there only " Visual C++ Redistributable 2015 "?

Or same question about 2015, 2017, 2019, and even maybe 2022. Do
vrsions with later years in their names contain everything that earlier versions contained? Or do you actually need the very versions that were
used by the author of each program that uses them?

I'm having trouble getting some software to work and the vendor's tech
wrote me to install the first one. When I went to the link he sent me,
it wouldn't let me download unless I subscribed, and subscription was $99.99/month/user, payable for one year in advance. IOW 1199.00, so you
save 86 cents by paying for the full year. I lookied in my cookie jar
and have 1203 dollars but I don't want to spend them all if I will get
the same thing as in my second line.

It's a camera program fwiw so maybe "studio" in the name is more
    important for camera programs.

This one, indeed, is not earlier than 2015.

And it leads me to the same place where they want me to subscribe.

    No it doesn't.

Yes it does. YOu can take my word for it or you can read what follows
until you're convinced. Remember that I was told Visual Studio was
part of the name of the file. The page Alan sent me to had a sentence,
"Some of the downloads that are mentioned in this article are currently available on my.visualstudio.com.", which clearly seemed to be the place
to get downloads that relate to visual studio, and when one clicks on my.visualstudio.com, it has you log into your microsft account and then
says "Sorry, we couldnt find your subscription" just like when I
clicked on the link the camera vendor gave me.

This is what the camera vendor tech support had said "Please download a software named Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 to your computer "Visual Studio Older Downloads - 2019, 2017, 2015"" and the
part in quotes is a link to https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/older-downloads/ and if one clicks
on the 2015, 17, or the 19 versions, and then on Download, it also takes
one to https://my.visualstudio.com/Benefits which takes one to the links
I posted last time that wanted $1199 dollars for the first year.

    Continue here:
This is no big deal. It's all clear now, but I don't want to leave stand
the notion that I was overanalysing. I was misled by the vendor and I
wanted to understand how the vendor could send me on a path to spend
$1200 when you folks found a free version. However, the vendor might not
notice that his link requires a subscription because its account *is*
already subscribed. So for someone using that account it looks like a
easy free place to download the file.

Meanwhile I tried to install the camera several times and it doesn't
install either. Unlike the $43 camera from Amazon that installed on the
first try and gave a beautfully clear picture, but didn't have a windows interface. The second camera is in the kitchen right next this laptop
which is well connected to my wifi, but I'll try to connect the camera
again tomorrow after moving closer to the router. But as of now, both
the hardware and software are giving problems. :-)

I really want this camera to work, and all the problems I'm having are
not bad because they're teaching me things.

But I do appreciate the effort you went t.o

Download and install the required redistributable.
No subscription needed to download or install.

    1) Install Windows Terminal from Microsoft Store.

    2) Launch it with Admistrator Privilege and write Winget and follow
    the easy setup.

    3)After write

Winget search vcredist and you get this thing: 2nd column is the name
    you need.

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable (x64)

    Same for 2008, 2010, 2012, 2015-2022 X86 and X64 (NO arm64 at ALL)

    5) Remember to use again Winget in future with

Winget upgrade (you get a list of all your programs) and after
    remember winget upgrade name.blabla etcetc

    6) With Winget you can search, upgrade, install or uninstall programs,
not only Microsoft things, lot of things, MalwareBytes, 7zip etcetc

Winget list (all your programs installed) and you can export the list
and after a reinstallation of Windows if happens, winget import list.

Winget tell also the latest version you have installed and new version
    if possible.

    Example:

    PS C:\Users\W11-V> winget upgrade
    Nome Id Versione
    Disponibile Origine ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Google Chrome Google.Chrome.EXE
    138.0.7204.51 138.0.7204.97 winget

    AOMEI Partition Assistant 10.7.0 AOMEI.PartitionAssistant 10.7.0
    10.8.1 winget

I have check now, Google Chrome, I have .51 but they released .97,
    winget upgrade Google.Chrome.EXE and voila.

    Enjoy it.

No, the page Alan sent provided separate downloads and the link to
    visual studio.com
    - no need to click on the link for visualstudio.com

    That page says
" This table lists the latest supported English (en-US) Microsoft
Visual C++ Redistributable packages for Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019,
    and 2022."

    - i.e. Look at the table and download the the version for your
device(ARM64, x86 or x64). The 'table' is under the subheading of Latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable version directly below under the ArchitectelLink group.
    - all those are the redistributable exe file for installation and
    applicable to Visual Studio 2015(2017, 2019, 2022)

Is the file at https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe the same
as Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015.

    Yes

After I installed it, Windows called it Microsft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64). No mention of Visual Studio.
    Exactly as it should

So is Microsft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64) the same as
Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015?

    Yes
Visual Studio builds the applications(software/programs, web site, web applications, web services, mobile apps, etc.)

The redistributable is the support application used by and required by
the program to run and function properly.

As noted earlier..you don't need Visual Studio, the VC++ 2015-2022 Redistributable is all that's necessary.

Is the file at https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe the same
as Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015.

    Yes

After I installed it, Windows called it Microsft Visual C++ 2015-2022
Redistributable (x64). No mention of Visual Studio.
    Exactly as it should

So is Microsft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64) the same as
Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015?

    Yes

    Thank you.

Visual Studio builds the applications(software/programs, web site, web >applications, web services, mobile apps, etc.)

The redistributable is the support application used by and required by
the program to run and function properly.

As noted earlier..you don't need Visual Studio, the VC++ 2015-2022

Other posters brought up the program. I never thought I needed the
program. Never considered getting the program, though maybe that's what
the $1200 would have been for.

    Redistributable is all that's necessary.

    Thank you.

    Fyi...
If a program needs a specific version of VC++(e.g. 2015-17-19-22)redistributable or earlier many will include the
redistributable in the installation files, some do not.
    - the reason why MSFT hosts the redistibutable files(even after
    support ends)for download.

In some cases, if the program is installed and doesn't run b/c the
required redistibutable is not included(during install) or presently
installed on the device thus necessitating the need to separately download/install redistributable....
    Why?
=> it may be necessary to uninstall the program, install the redistributable, then reinstall the program
    or
=> install the redistibutable and reinstall(on top of existing) the
    program

To ensure all the hooks and calls for the redistributable in Windows(and
    the registry)are in place.

You always want the latest applicable VC++ redistributable.
If that's not acceptable to your software then something weird and
    rather suspicious is going on.

It's so to have the latest version that Windows Updates will usually automatically take you to the latest version pretty quickly anyway.

At the time of me writing this message all earlier VC++ redistributables
for any VC++ from 2015 to 2022 are replaced by:
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable 14.44.35211

There are separate x86 and x64 versions and, to be honest, I'm not sure
if one ever needs the x86 version on an x64 Windows install. I think the
x64 version may include x86 support, but I don't know.

If you did want Visual Studio, because you wanted to write software for Windows, and to do it the official Microsoft way, there is always
"Visual Studio Community Edition", which is 100% free and, for most programmers working on their own, there really isn't much at all that's missing from it compared to the full version.

I think that's fine if the software that needs it is 32 bit.

With many of the older ones you definitely needed the right one (x86 or
x64) for the software you had, so you could, in some cases, end up
    needing both versions.

It's so to have the latest version that Windows Updates will usually
automatically take you to the latest version pretty quickly anyway.

At the time of me writing this message all earlier VC++ redistributables
for any VC++ from 2015 to 2022 are replaced by:
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable 14.44.35211

There are separate x86 and x64 versions and, to be honest, I'm not sure
if one ever needs the x86 version on an x64 Windows install. I think the
x64 version may include x86 support, but I don't know.

How about an x86 version in a 64 bit system? Could that work with
anything? On the previous 64-bit computer I noticed that I had some
x86 redistributables, but I don't remember why or if they helped
anything. There was no confusion back then like this thread, trying to
make something work that did not want to.

It's not necessarily a relation of x64 devices needing or using only 64
    bit redistributable.
=> The program that requires the redistributable is coded to determine
what architecture and version it needs.
i.e. a 32 bit software application depending on when built and
released may require a specific redistibutable and not the latest
    available version.
Thus, as noted in another post...VC++ 2015-2022 Redistributable may
not be appropriate for software that required(or coded) to look for and
use an earlier version. That uniqueness may easily require a 32 bit
version specific VC++ Redistibutable to be installed on a 64 bit
    Win10/11 device.

Installing both 32-bit and 64-bit materials at the same time,
is not particularly for the benefit of the program doing that.
What they're trying to do, is head off situations where the
user is "half-up-to-date". By installing both, that's an
all or nothing approach to installing "Version X".

Most developers shy away from mixing 32-bit and 64-bit modules
in the same package. Yet, if you have sufficient skill, you
can do things like that. For most developers, there is no incentive
    to doing that.

Users have to know entirely too much about DLLs and such.

The DynDLL support is partially missing on Windows 11. Previous
OSes, the loader would stop and print a message indicating which DLL
was missing. In Windows 11 that no longer works, and the user is
expected to use their own memory banks as to what the dependencies
    on a gnuwin32 program are.

These are no longer used. These are "glue DLLs" that Microsoft tried
to install at every opportunity back in the Win7 era. Firefox used to
have one of the nicest curated set of these, including sets for
several Windows OSes. With FOSS projects, the user was expected to
fend for themselves, and guess at where they could find these.
If you look in a Firefox installer today, these are gone (because
Firefox doesn't have to support Win7 any more).

    Name: api-ms-win-core-console-l1-1-0.dll
    Size: 18624 bytes (18 KiB)
    SHA256: BCE066193FEB60B08EDF4CBEB490AAAA5DFFEB8A63A720CADF948748A9AF4B8F

One of the people in another group, he had some program that
was asking for instances of those, I couldn't find them in Google!
The 1-1-0 part, he had a program asking for something with a "4" in it.
And that's a glue-DLL, it doesn't have any actual code inside it.

A user is expected to know about sixteen different kinds of program installers, the entire history of DLLs, how Visual Studio works, and so on. You're
earning a CS degree, without going to school.

    Iirc, Windows Essentials 2012(e.g. WLM, PhotoGallery/Movie Maker/Writer)
    uses the 2008 Redistributable
    - on this device both 32 and 64 bit are present in Programs/Features
though it's a bit varied on the file versions when comparing to the redistributable web page latest available(for download)
The web page indicates the latest version as 9.0.30729.5677, yet the installed version is 9.0.30729.6161. Which may indicate a later version
of the 2008 redistibutable was installed or updated from an earlier version.

This device(probably for some other software):
    - has the 2013 x86 redistributable 12.0.30501 yet the web page says
the latest is a later version 12.0.40664.0
    -has 2015-2019 x86 (14.22.27821) and 2015-2022 x64(14.40.33810), the
web page says the latest is v14.44.35208.0

    Note:
[1]I do vaguely recall a recent Office M365 reported issue that required
or prompted(when opening on it its apps - Outlook, Word, Excel, PPT,
etc) indicating a need for 2015-2022 redistributable.
    - my understanding is M365 was developed using Visual Studio but not explicitly requiring the redistributable for some of its features/functionality
[2] Other programs(installed on this device) may require or use those
    above noted redistributables
