• logon.ans not working

From Ebojager@VERT/OUTLAND to All on Fri Jul 7 23:33:02 2023
Hello, so I moved on to create an ANSI logon screen, and built it in THEDRAW saved it using BLOCK Mode and sent it over to my Linux remote host via FTP.
Copied it to my sbbs/text/menu/logon.ans and it cant find it. If I use just a text logon.msg it works ok, and if I view the logon.ans from the /sbbs/data/dirs folder where it uploads to, it views just fine from within the BBS' system bulletins menu, where I added it to the list to check. Ive been trying to look this up and everything I find seems to say it should work. My only thought might be Im using the Renegade Command Shell, could that be preventing this, and if so is there anything I can do about it?
    Thank you,

    Ebojager

is the bbs detecting your terminal type correctly?
    just copy logon.ans over logon.asc
people that don't have ansi will see the ansi code, though.

Thank you, yes the BBS does seem to detect it, as it displays if I move the file to a different location. What ended up working was manually making a new file with nano in /text/menu/logon.ans and then importing the .ans file and saving. LOL must be maybe a permision issue as the BBS is on Linux and I created the file on Windows in a DOSBox with THEDRAW.
Seems to be working now that I know the formula. Glad you brought up the copy to .asc thing. Can I just rename the file to .asc and it will work for those who dont have ansi terminals?

No, the command shell is not a factor.

No, don't do that (copy a .ans files to .asc or .msg). Instead, use ans2asc to convert the .ans file to a .asc file and then non-ANSI terminals will see that file.

I do an ans2asc on the ansi file and replace the logon.msg. It gets "dumbed down" for non-ansi callers.. I hadn't tried having a separate logon ansi.

Ok, I saved a block mode one on the quickest speed in THEDRAW, so only 15 lines and Im getting an Unsupported ANSI code 's' and 'u' probably on each line.

Those are save/restore cursor position codes: there is no equivalent for non-ANSI terminals, so such a file can't be converted to Ctrl-A format. Change your save options or maybe consider using PabloDraw instead which can open/edit/save Ctrl-A formatted (.msg, .asc) files directly.

if you use the ascii .msg format and it has synchronet color codes, the bbs will strip the colors for the user if they dont support ansi.
if you just copy over ansi to .msg file then it will display the ansi codes which their terminal can't interpret if it doesn't support ansi.
which is a long shot. most people that call your bbs will have ansi support.

You can use ans2msg to convert it to using synchronet color codes, as logon.msg, then it will display ascii (no colors) to those terminals and the color codes to ansi capable terminals.

Worth noting, is TheDraw will likely be saving to a file in all capital letters, and linux is likely using a case-sensitive file system... so that's likely the problem.

Synchronet's internal file printing/displaying functions automatically adjust filename case on unix file systems: they're not case sensitive. So, should make no difference.

Thanks, ya I did rename them lower case. I might have to try the ans2msg next time. I ended up saving out of THEDRAW as ASCII which worked really well other than being black and white. I then just punched in the color codes.
The not being able to find the files unless I remade them in linux in the /text/menu directory kinda has me stumped. I do have a set permission owner in the SMC which I might try next time just for fun.

Maybe try using the OS shell (e.g. bash) directly. I don't think you're going to find any experience with or support for "SMC" here.
